Creating pattern motifs

SKETCH, SKETCH, SKETCH!

Draw, doodle, play with lines and shapes. I need to do lots of drawing before I start with a pattern build!

Creating 20-30 sketches produces a good size library to choose from. A valuable bit of learning so far in my pattern design journey is to ensure there is a variety of size and complexity in the sketches to give lots of options when pattern building.

I like to sketch in Procreate on my iPad. It negates the need to scan images into a computer and I love how easy it is to correct mistakes and redo ideas. Once I’m happy with a drawing, I can airdrop it to my laptop- quick and easy!

How do you like to sketch?

I’d love to find out about your sketching process and maybe try out some new ideas. Let’s chat in the comments!

Take care,

Michelle
